Welcome! This class is intended for writers who would like to join a supportive, instructor-led group for sharing and receiving constructive feedback on their writing as well as reading and giving feedback to other writers. Please note: This is a critique-only (i.e. workshop) class. While feedback and discussion will naturally touch on principles of writing, this is not an instruction-based or generative class.

Meeting Dates: September 15, 10am - 11:30am; September 22 - October, 10am - 12:30pm (7 sessions total)

How it works:

• Our first meeting will be an introductory session of approximately 90 minutes where we’ll get a chance to meet each other and where I will lay the ground rules for how the class will work. After that, we’ll meet for 2.5 hours each week

• Class size is limited to 6 students. Two students will share each week, for a total of 2 opportunities to share your work.

• Writers will be invited to share works of up to 2,000 words.

• The class is open to writers of prose — fiction and non-fiction.

• All sessions will meet over Zoom.

Expectations:

• Submit 2 works (or redrafts) of up to 2,000 words over the course of the class. Shorter is fine too! We love flash and excerpts of works in progress.

• Read your fellow students’ work in advance of each class.

• Adhere to guidelines (provided by me on the first day of class) for providing critiques.

• Maintain a positive and supportive collaborative environment. This means being prepared to give strength-based feedback and respectful and constructive suggestions that recognize that writers will have different experience levels coming into the class.

“I was new to writing fiction, a little anxious around the edges about trying it at all. Elizabeth’s writing class “Lying on Purpose” guided our small group of writers into the world of fiction with her careful reading of our work, her guidance and always clear and thoughtful suggestions… I would absolutely sign up for it again.”
